Once more....

Well, I'm back. Not that anyone will notice, I don't think anyone reads this anymore, not that I ever had that big of an audience anyway. I haven't updated my blog in about 6 months. But, I'm feeling kinda sickly, can't sleep and thought I would just do the stream of conscience thing.

It's been a great year. Traveled a lot and had a great time. Been to Dallas, Chicago (twice), New York city, all with my best friend. Maybe in the near future I'll post some of the pictures.

I'm going to try to at least post once a week.

Like I said, not feeling well. David, Matt, Justin and I went to Chicago for a long weekend this past weekend and we all caught something....don't know if we should blame it on the airplane or the subway/train. Either way, I can't seem to shake the crud in my chest. If I'm not better tomorrow morning, think I may go see the doctor (again).

Since my last post, I've added a new member to my family. I have a new dog. Maggie (my Miniature Schnauzer) and I adopted a Beagle named Alice. Shes uber sweet and very affectionate.

All in all this has been a pretty great year, however, I can't seem to make happy work. I'm not espically unhappy, just not happy. I want to be happy, I really do. I'm not depressed, just a little sad on occasion....not everyday or all the time, usually just in the evenings when I'm sitting at home.

I've read some pretty good books this year. I really like Erik Larson, he's written some awesome books. If all history was written like this, I would probably have been a history major....

Well, I don't know what else to say....I think my fever is going up....I'm cold. So, I'll go to bed and try to get some sleep....hopefully I'll sleep soon...

KV Pharmaceutical

I know its been a long time since I updated my blog.... I saw this online this morning, and it pissed my off, so I thought I would re-post it. I don't remember where it came from, so I can give the source...

KV Pharmaceutical won the exclusive rights to produce a shot that help prevent premature births, and decided to celebrate by engaging in some serious price gouging. Thanks to KV, a shot that once cost about $10 will now cost $1,500. Why? Apparently, just because.

According to ABC News, KV's new arbitrary and blatantly greedy pricing strategy puts the cost of treatment over the course of a pregnancy at $30,000.

Astute pharma investors will no doubt point out that KV must have spent a lot of money for research and development of the product, so are justified to set the price. Except, as ABC pointed out, the shot has been around since 1958 and, in fact, we all made the outlay for development.

"All the upfront development of the drug was done by the National Institute of Health," Dr. Kevin Ault, associate professor of gynecology and obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine, told ABC. "You and I paid for that with our tax dollars, it's not like this pharmaceutical company is trying to recoup its investments in research and development, as is usually the reason for the price of new drugs."

Ultimately, the Food and Drug Administration gets all the thanks for granting KV not only the exclusive rights but the cojones to price gouge expectant mothers reveling in the experience of an at-risk pregnancy. The FDA approval prevents the pharmacies that had been producing the shot from doing so anymore and also prevents doctors from using anything but the KV formulation.

It's always nice to see the government making decisions that are in the best interests of its citizens. And, of course, who would suggest that KV should face any regulation?

Super Harvest Moon

Northern summer changes to fall on Sept. 22nd at 11:09 pm EDT. At that precise moment, called the autumnal equinox, the Harvest Moon can be found soaring high overhead with the planet Jupiter right beside it. The two brightest objects in the night sky will be in spectacular conjunction to mark the change in seasons.


For the first time in almost 20 years, northern autumn is beginning on the night of a full Moon. The coincidence sets the stage for a "Super Harvest Moon" and a must-see sky show to mark the change of seasons.

The action begins at sunset on Sept 22nd, the last day of northern summer. As the sun sinks in the west, bringing the season to a close, the full Harvest Moon will rise in the east, heralding the start of fall. The two sources of light will mix together to create a kind of 360-degree, summer-autumn twilight glow that is only seen on rare occasions.


Keep an eye on the Moon as it creeps above the eastern skyline. The golden orb may appear strangely inflated. This is the Moon illusion at work. For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, a low-hanging Moon appears much wider than it really is. A Harvest Moon inflated by the moon illusion is simply gorgeous.


The Harvest Moon gets its name from agriculture. In the days before electric lights, farmers depended on bright moonlight to extend the workday beyond sunset. It was the only way they could gather their ripening crops in time for market. The full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox became "the Harvest Moon," and it was always a welcome sight.

This one would be extra welcome because it is extra "Harvesty."

Usually, the Harvest Moon arrives a few days to weeks before or after the beginning of fall. It's close, but not a perfect match. The Harvest Moon of 2010, however, reaches maximum illumination a mere six hours after the equinox. This has led some astronomers to call it the "Harvestest Moon" or a "Super Harvest Moon." There hasn't been a comparable coincidence since Sept 23, 1991, when the difference was about 10 hours, and it won't happen again until the year 2029.

A Super Harvest Moon, a rare twilight glow, a midnight conjunction—rarely does autumn begin with such celestial fanfare.

Perspectives

The company I work for pledged to do 30,000 hours of community service this summer. Yesterday afternoon, I went to the OU's Children's hospital to the "Zone." I was really not looking forward to going. Everyone knows I'm not a huge fan of children. Generally they don't like me and the feeling is mutual. The Zone is an area in the Children's hospital full of games, toys, Sony PlayStations, WII's, pinball machines, air hockey tables and the such. However, hanging out with these kids, who have life threatening illness and injuries that would make a grown man cry, was truly life changing. We played games with these kids, silly games, but they laughed, and screamed when they won and were overwhelmed by the silly prizes we brought them. It was truly rewarding. It really puts a perspective on things in one's life when your healthy and these children who know, many of them that their odds are not good, are playing, and having a good time. I'm so happy I went. Maybe my life isn't as bad as I thought it was.
